About the event

Like a book club, only easier! A movie will be chosen each week to review together as a group. No pressure to watch the movie, just come enjoy this fun chat! Each week's movie will be decided in the group and then posted to the website after.

Movie: Indian Horse

Based on Ojibwe author Richard Wagamese’s novel set in the 1960s, Indian Horse uses the hook of Canada’s national sport — hockey — to grapple with Canada’s darkest policy: the Indian residential school system. For over a hundred years, indigenous children were forcibly removed from their parents and communities and placed in brutal “schools”, ostensibly to help them “assimilate” into white Canadian culture.

Review by Antonio D. Sison  January 25 2020

  • If the Canadian film "Indian Horse" is an index of how aggressive assimilation was brought to bear in the real-life context of the country's indigenous peoples, it leaves no doubt that "aggressive" was the operative word.
