OSA ADMINISTRATOR Congratulations to Samantha Norberg celebrating a month of employment with us since May 25! Samantha has swiftly got up to speed on our vision, programs and activities. She has created the basics for our volunteer program, launched our GSuite Google program to keep all our important documentation online and is starting to get to know you all.
ALERT! COVID-19 TESTING - JUST MINUTES FROM OAKRIDGE Covid19 testing is available to everyone now, whether or not you have symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has. Might reassure some seniors who worry about their health and/or have compromised immune systems. Phone 811 and set up an appointment. The testing site is behind Superstore just off Southland drive - very easy to find. The address is 10301 Southport Lane SW. (Turn right from Southland Drive, just before the traffic light, past CIBC bank on the corner. Drive straight ahead and follow the signs. Big parking lot on the right with people directing where to go.) Just drive through - they test by swabbing your throat and phone you with the results.
OSA CANADA DAY-STAMPEDE CELEBRATION FRIDAY JULY 3 About 20 members met for a joyful celebration on a glorious day, Friday July 3. Members got into the spirit with their red/white decor and outfits. A few fit souls followed the parade on foot plus Norma on her bicycle. A procession of cars - notably Tom’s beautiful shiny black 1917 Ford Model T (Bella) – followed the RV, decorated with flags and OSA posters. Along the way we gave out flags, pins, pencils, our postcards, and engaged neighbours as we went. Hugh accompanied us with his basket of fresh-picked produce from the Community Garden - yes, radishes and greens ready to eat 30 days after planting! Hugh knows all the secrets of successful seeds and cropping. We formed a happy masked throng, our destination the closed ring road connector at 90th Avenue. Most had brought chairs to visit at a safe physical distance. It was great to finally see one another face-to-face again and welcome new members too.
MEN’S COFFEE GROUP – IN THE PARK June 25 was our first opportunity to have a men’s coffee meeting in person since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us with local restrictions in March. Hugh, Barry, Garry & Paul met physically for first time in many months...all safely distanced. Hugh Stewart reports "We are arranging this with appropriate levels of caution and consistent with public health guidelines. We are limiting our meeting to a maximum of 12 people on a first registered basis and request you bring your own chairs, coffee and snacks.” Hugh plans to make this a regular event weather permitting. Details on the OSA website under Activities & Events.
LADIES CHAT/MOVIE GROUP – first (outdoor) meeting since March Jennifer Pendergast hosted seven members of the group in her backyard oasis surrounded by birds and flowers. It raised our spirits amid joyous laughs and stories. Accompanied by English high tea (all supplied by our generous hostess) we brought our own cups/mugs and each shared the stories behind them. Somehow we never got around to reviewing the week’s two movies. Next time! Please consider joining this group, it can easily be divided into smaller groups as it grows. Details on the OSA website under Activities & Events.

HUGH STEWART
Hugh and Miranda moved to Calgary in 1980 and lived in Killarney and Lakeview with their children R, F & K. Hugh's career as an engineer in oil and gas took him across Canada and internationally. The family moved to Oakridge and Hugh returned to community service in 2018 as he prepared to retire. He is the VP Civic Affairs and Planning on the Community Centre board, as well as initiating the Oakridge Community Garden project.
Hugh enjoys working and volunteering with his neighbours and looks forward to our initiatives in the garden.
IGNITING NEIGHBORS - VILLAGE CONCEPT REPORTING Julie Kerns submitted a 3-month Activity Report to our funders at the Calgary Seniors Resource Society, including a narrative of how we have adapted to the pandemic. She reports, “OSA should be very proud of how much we have accomplished in a short period of time.” We will soon embark on a research project to learn more about what it will take to make to make the Oakridge Village dream come true.
TAI CHI Look for Tai Chi classes to return again in September. Let us know if you are interested in a beginner class or wish to continue based on the knowledge you have already learned.
NEED HELP GETTING A HANDLE ON TECHNOLOGY? OSA is committed to bridging the digital divide for older adults. We can help you use the internet, connect to social programs via Zoom, and more! If you don’t have a computer, tablet, or Internet connection, we can help with obtaining these. Please contact Samantha.
SHOUT OUTS Thanks this week to the Oakridge Co-op for their generous donation of four $25 gift certificates for membership sign-up incentives.
