OAKRIDGE COMMUNITY GARDEN (OCG) PROGRAM
Annual Plant Exchange:
Hugh Stewart reports “We held a successful Plant Exchange on Saturday 30 May, with 8 tables and over 120 plants exchanged while complying with COVID-19 guidelines. We had 15 volunteers, 6 participants and 5 groups/individuals who saw the signs and dropped in. We were very fortunate with the weather, and the range of exciting plants exchange/donated.” See the OCG Website for information about volunteering in the Oakridge Community Garden.
Thanks to all the volunteers who assisted with the Plant Exchange and working on the Community Garden, and to Hugh Stewart and Elaine Smith for heading them up.
Garden:
Despite COVID-19 guidelines and a late requirement from the City to have raised beds for edibles, we were able to obtain lumber and soil, build our raised beds with volunteers, and despite storms and rain had plants in the beds by Sunday 31 May, our stretch target. Congratulations to all who made this happen.
We were also fortunate to be awarded funding via a Calgary Foundation Neighbourhood Grant so we will be using these funds for lumber, water tanks, compost, possibly more beds (with sweat equity labour), and other critical gardening supplies. Planting will continue in June while we continue to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines. We expect to learn quite a few lessons and hope more residents will join our OCG. Walk by and have a look.
POLE WALKING – Visit the OSA Website for Activities/Events
Norma Becerra, one of the first members to sign up for this free class says “The benefit of using walking poles is a full-body workout. Our friendly and professional instructor mentioned that walking with poles improves our balance and takes some of the load off our lower back, hips and knees. Plus, walking with OSA members is an enjoyable social occasion.”
MEMBER GINETTE IS A RADIO CANADA STAR!
Congratulations to Ginette Raphael who was interviewed by Radio Canada (in French) this week as part of the Alberta Story Teller program. Watch for her interview in English on our website soon.
