November 2023 E-News

The Halloween event at the Legion was a great success with 35 in attendance all dressed in creative costumes including a coven of witches. Anne, Sonja and Shearer showed everyone that old people can really dance! Best costume went to Maureen Andrews who came as a taco.

We appreciated the lovely feedback from Maureen (not because she won 2 prizes) who said: Just wanted to say well done on the party last night. I know it takes more than just making a call to a venue to get everyone in. I'm sure you all spent copious amounts of time meeting, thinking of prizes, picking up the various prizes. The other thing I like is it supports an organization that really deserves the patronage. Well done and thanks very much. In October we started a new program, beginner Mahjong and we are bumbling along trying to learn the game and having lots of laughs. Every Wednesday, 1 pm at Social Grounds, Register on Meetup. We also have a Wed. Coffee at 2 pm at Social Grounds, the best new coffee shop in our community. Regrettably, we canceled the planned bus trip to Rosebud Theatre to see the Christmas performance of All is Calm due to a low response. Let us know what social programs you would be interested in. Coming up in November we will have our regular programs and hopefully we will be able to introduce a new Travel Group. The SW55+ Connect board is delighted to welcome Cheryl Deringer to our board of directors. We all know Cheryl's passion for encouraging social connections among older adults through her active volunteerism at Cedarbrae and with SWC. Cheryl's background includes 25 years experience working in the senior serving sector, having managed two seniors’ drop in centres and serving on several non-profit boards. Thank you Cheryl and we look forward to working with you. As Maureen points out, all of the activities offered by SW55+ Connect are volunteer run. We welcome other members to join our board or become event hosts. We really need a volunteer treasurer. Our membership renewal for 2024 will begin this month and we want to clarify the confusion between membership in Meetup, membership at Cedarbrae and SW55+ Connect membership. We are a registered non-profit organization that generates revenue through our $20 annual membership fee and we currently have almost 100 members. Our annual expenses for insurance, website, post office box, Meetup subscription and operations are about $3,000 per year. The 549 members reported on Meetup are not necessarily members of our organization at this time. Monday Canasta at Cedarbrae, while started by SWC, is now a Cedarbrae program. Your friends at SWC: Julie, Sheila, Debra, Sonja, Ted
